FILM CLUB STILL ON HOLD
MORE BAD NEWS- I was unable to get any volunteers or new members to start on the 21st February. The sunday spot has now been booked up at St Davids Hall by Belly dance group.
I am now looking to try and attach it to one of the schools in Whitehawk, either St Andrews, St Marks or St Josephs or Whitehawk Primary and the WASP initiative. I have sent out e mails to all of the schools but as yet the only people to contact me were the WASP initiative who could not confirm any weekly dates with me.
I will keep you posted as I know more.

FILMING ALICES JAZZ PROJECT
On Thursday 10th December 1.00pm
we will be filming Alices jazz project
at St georges hall, Newick Road, Mouslecoomb,BN1 7JJ
FILM WORKSHOP BEGINS- SUNDAY 15 NOVEMBER-JUBILEE LIBRARY BRIGHTON-2-4pm
Why this time?
Winter is here and that means less light so there are only certain times when we can film out doors with enough light so that means weekends and the thing about weekends is I am only able to do from 2-4pm.
We could try and an do after school but as there isn’t enough light from 4pm to film we would need to find an indoor venue large enough for 2 groups to carry out projects without one disturbing the other whilst filming. so a school hall ,or something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.
I suggest this Sunday 15th November meeting up at Jubilee library for 2pm in the childrens section(they have a small corner with table and chairs at the back) where I can show you the equipment and we can finally film something.
EDITING-LAPTOPS PLEASE-(1 or 2)
if any parents or members have access to a laptop or laptops that they can bring along on Sunday that would be wonderful. I have asked at the library but at the moment they are not keen to have people uploading their films to their pcs. So if anyone has a laptop they would be willing to bring in and lend us for the 2hours on Sunday that would be great.
VOLUNTEERS
We need ’em. I haven’t got’em. If any parent could come this weekend and be with the group to make sure they don’t turn the library upside down whilst filming Ghostbusters 3 that would be a big help. we can discuss possible future payment of some kind, if it becomes regular.
that’s it
Trust you can make it.

FILM WORKSHOP- ABOUT TO START
Right we’re off.
In order to satisfy the terms of the Scarman trust the course needs to be run in area where there can be said to be greater needs and fewer chances, in this case we have selected Whitehawk and Hangleton. Unfortunately, once the course becomes open to the general public there is then less of a chance for the original members to get a go because the places may be taken up by those in greater need. And because of the ratio of students to cameras there can only be a maximum of 15 members at any one time.
What I propose then is this
I will run courses for White hawk at the Whitehawk Youth centre (time yet to be arranged) and at BhIp (every Wednesday for 12 weeks from 3.30-5pm 1st Wednesday in November)based on their needs and these will be open to both public and any Magic Lanterners who wish to attend.
Then on Sunday ( or another day chosen by you) I will voluntarily run another course for Magic Lantern members only. This course will be for the original members who proposed the course and any other Magic Lanterner. However to do this we will need a place or someone’s coffee table to run it from.
At the moment of writing Grania has offered her shop as place to run it from on whatever time is most convenient for members. Her shop is covered by public liability. I am also thinking of using Jubilee library as a place to meet up as they have computers for members to upload films. Or if any parent , guardian out there has CRB clearance perhaps they would like to invite members to meet up at their house.
All we really need is a meeting up point, space to film in and access to a PC
Any invites or ideas then please email me
or leave us a post here and we will come to pick them up
So now you have 3 choices
You can choose to attend Wednesday BhIP from 3-30-5pm –
Whitehawk- from whenever we decide on a time
Magic Lantern only- on whatever time we decide
Please let me know your thoughts and proposed times?
Yours
Magic Mark
A new project to develop film making skills in children aged 5 to 12.
It was initiated by Mark Locke, Magic Lantern’s Artistic Director .
The project is funded by the Novas Scarman Trust under the
Children Can Do It! initiative.
The club will be run in association with the community group Tarner Light.
Details of venue and dates will be announced shortly.
Children will work in small teams collaborating or taking turns in writing, story-boarding, designing, directing, acting, filming and cutting.
If you are interested in joining the project, post a note here or contact Mark Locke

Hi Mark,
I’d be interested in doing it. I can’t do the Wednesdays because I do archery every other Wednesday but I could do the Sundays.
Ruben
Hi Guys,
Libby pointed me to your post. Just so you know, Shmash.tv functionality has now all been rolled into the latest site at http://Create.tv.
We’ve used Create successfully with young children – they love using the editor and can do a lot under supervision. Obviously it’s not designed with 5 year olds in mind, and you may be aiming to build something more akin to CBBCs Me and my movie? Anyway, please contact me if we can help in any way.
Cheers
Mark.

I think a Sunday would be best. Mark, what’s your nunber. Keen to talk about a project we are setting up for young people. Or you can call me on 07968 687 107. Got a meeting at 1pm Thursday so might be nice to talk before then. Best – Libby
Hi Mark
Thanks for the info and glad to see its all coming together.
The Sunday idea for ML members is great and very kind of you. Yasmin would love to attend.
What and where is BhIp ? We may be able to get along on the Wednesdays.
Regarding film cameras, I may have an old clockwork 16mm Bolex lurking in the attic which was my Grandad’s . I will have a look and see if it is there and still usable.
Best wishes
Mark Jay
A friend’s company has created this collaborative film making platform for children / young people. Check it out! http://shmash.tv/
Thank you, Libby, very interesting. It seems to be aimed at film education for children in the 12+ age group but highly relevant also to what we are trying to do at the Magic Lantern for children in the 5-12 year age bracket. I particularly like the ‘template’ idea.
I have passed your note to colleagues more directly concerned with our film making initaitives, notably Mark Locke here, Alessandra Romanelli in Italy/CH and Francine Pickel and Cyrill Tissot in Switzerland.
With warm regards Balint
This sounds an excellent opportunity for children to gain media literacy. Are you linking up with any primary or secondary schools locally? I am sure Verity (11) would be interested in taking part, and maybe some of her friends too, so I will watch for further news.
Children can Do It! – but when can they start making films?
A further delay in getting this project off the ground, due to increasing Health & Safety issues.
Although Mark has worked with us for years and is a registered cycling instructor with CRB clearance working with many schools, he must now in addition take a SAFE CHILD course before funds can be released.
He is now working on it, so watch out for further news.
Balint
Definitely want to offer this to Bea (8) and maybe friends. Will spread the word if you like!
Thank you for your technical support and comments – and the offer to spread the word! Balint
